Concepts of medieval archaeology, building archaeology and building research.
Building investigations in the foundations area. Introduction to the methods of medieval archaeology: prospecting, excavation techniques, documentation, analysis of findings and results. Relative and absolute chronology: archaeological and scientific determination of age.
Building investigation of the superstructure. Methods of building archaeology. Plan analysis and building mass analysis, interpretation of written and pictorial sources, autopsy and non-destructive building investigation. Investigation and assessment of non-homogeneity in buildings (joints, change of material and of formal structure, overlaps and interferences in buildings and building parts). Documentation and securing of findings.
Technical analysis of buildings. Wall bonding and wall structure, jointing technique, rendering, openings, vaulting and roof structures. Stone working and surface structures as dating criterion. Scientific determination of age and material analyses.
Pragmatics of building research: written sources - archaeological findings - art-historical analysis.
