Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is designed for students interested in picture theory/iconic criticism. It will deal with significant moments in the (western) art history of what art historian Meyer Schapiro has defined as the "field"-aspect of image signs. It will also include reflections on the history of concepts such as 'campus', 'campo', 'champ', 'Feld' and, of course, 'field' - inside as well as outside the literature on the arts.

Examination topics

The course aims at fostering the students' competence in reading theoretical texts, analysing works of art and writing art historical essays. Each participant prepares an oral presentation on a chosen topic and (hopefully) writes a well researched and argued paper of about 15 pages (with footnotes).
