The synagogue at Dura Europos: the influence of Jewish sources on iconography
Narrative cycles in the iconographic programs in Rome and Ravenna in the 5th and 6th centuries
The Old Testament in early Christian book art
Early medieval Bible illustration (Carolingian and Castilian art)
Psalter illustration in Byzantium and the West
Romanesque Bibles
Byzantine Octateuchs
The Old Testament in the court art of the Capetian kings in France
Biblical themes in Hebrew illuminated manuscripts
Biblical themes in Islamic art

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is designed as Introduction into the practice of iconographic interpretation; it will discuss a variety of primary sources, secondary literature, and various materials towards cultural and historical contextualization of the subjects discussed.

Oral exam at the end of the course
Written exam at the end of the semester (for those who did not attend the oral exam)

Examination topics

Frontal lectures with power point presentation. If the numbers of attendees allows: class discussion and reading of primary sources in translation
