Aims, contents and method of the course
This exercise shall deal with questions concerning the stylistic development within the history of photography and shall include a basic approach to media history and cultural studies. Selected topics for analysis concern early studio photography, the visual science of physiognomy, private family photography, the role of authenticity and staging or conceptual self-representation.Fotografen/innen / Photographers: Nadar, Disdéri, Julia Margaret Cameron, Gräfin Castiglione, Alfred Stieglitz, Trude Fleischmann, August Sander, Helmar Lerski, Dorothea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol, Urs Lüthi, Nan Goldin, Thomas Ruff.
Assessment and permitted materials
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students shall have an intense and critical look at photographs of human faces and shall present selected positions of the history of portrait photography in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Examination topics
Methods: Distribution of topics; oral presentations and discussions; group exercises; written papers (5 - 8 pages).Exam: In-class-participation; oral presentation; written paper.

Pflichtlektüre (Roland Barthes, Die helle Kammer), allgemeine Literatur zur Geschichte der Fotografie und zur Porträtfotografie, sowie spezielle Literatur zu den einzelnen monografischen und thematischen Positionen.
