Aims, contents and method of the course

Das Leben des Symeon Salos weicht vom dem anderer byzantinischer Heiliger insofern ab, als er nach Jahren der Askese am Rande der Wüste und dem Erlangen der apatheia in die kleinstädtische Welt des damaligen Syrien zurückkehrt und dort mit seinem sonderbaren bis skandalösen Verhalten vordergründig den Anti-Heiligen spielt, derart die Verachtung der Bürger provoziert und dies in Demut erträgt. Die Schilderung seiner Taten eröffnet uns Einblicke in den Alltag der frühbyzantinischen Zeit.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Vertieftes Verständnis für das hagiographische Schrifttum und eine Sonderform asketischen Lebens, quellenkritische Auswertung von Informationen zum byzantinischen Alltagsleben.

Examination topics

Übersetzende Lektüre des Textes der Vita des Symeon Salos, v.a. des Emesa-Teils durch die Teilnehmer; Kommentierung der Bios-Struktur und (realienkundlichen) Inhalte seitens des Leiters der Lehrveranstaltung.

Voraussetzung für eine Teilnahme: Altgriechischkenntnisse auf Maturaniveau bzw. absolvierter Lehrgang Altgriechisch im Rahmen des Studienplans Byzantinistik / Neogräzistik.
