Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The assessment will consider the correct interpretation of various archaeological sources (visual and material) discussed in the lectures.
Students are required to develop the ability to organize knowledge clearly in order to answer exam questions correctly. Minimum vote for positive assessment: 51% of the number of points.

The lectures offer an introductory overview of Late Antique and Early Christian Archaeology. They will address the chronological definition, method, and main research areas of the discipline with attention to society, material and visual culture. The discussione will consider the formation of Christian space in urban and rural contexts, and will pay specific attention to the decline of pagan temples, the rise of religious structures (domus ecclesiae, churches, monasteries etc.), the development of specific burial areas (as mausolea, cemeteries and catacombs) and structures connected to specific rituals (for example Baptisteries). The discussion will consider how these elements contributed in shaping of a new religious topography, in particular the rise and development of the martyrial cult, that had its effects on pilgrimage, on material culture, on art and architecture. The geographical horizon will encompass the Mediterranean basin with attention to specific regional case studies.
