Aims, contents and method of the course

Diese Vorlesung soll in das Studium von Byzanz einführen - ein Reich von seltener Langlebigkeit (4.-15. Jahrhundert) und einer bemerkenswerten Widerstandsfähigkeit. Diese Widerstandsfähigkeit ermöglichte dem Reich, sich nach mehreren einschneidenden Ereignissen zu regenerieren und neu zu erfinden. Die Einführung soll die Teilnehmenden einerseits mit den wichtigsten Aspekten der byzantinischen Zivilisation (Kaiserhof, Rolle der Hauptstadt Konstantinopel, Weltanschauung und Wertesystem, Beziehung zur Antike und zum Christentum) und den großen Phasen der tausendjährigen byzantinischen Geschichte vertraut machen. Sie soll auch die verschiedenen Ansätze und Methoden zur Erforschung von Byzanz vorstellen, die auf der materiellen und visuellen Kultur (Kunstgeschichte, Siegelkunde, Numismatik, Archäologie) oder auf Texten und Dokumenten (Sozial- und Politikgeschichte, Geistesgeschichte und Philosophie, Theologie, Wissenschaft -, Literaturgeschichte) beruhen.
