Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is focused on Cn. Pompeius (106-48 B.C.) who, after a stunning career as "commander in chief" of the Roman Republic, reorganised the political world of the Roman dominated Near East. In the course of the internal strife between Roman generals and politicians he first became an ally of Caesar but finally lost his life as his defeated enemy. The figure of Pompey exemplarily illustrates the problems caused by the extraordinary position of a successful general for the political system of the Roman Republic which was based on the aristocratic equality within it`s ruling class. The seminar aims to demonstrate this set of problems by treating diverse thematic complexes like (besides others) Pompey`s special commands, his reorganisation of the Near East or the vital elements of his self representation.
