Aims, contents and method of the course

After their victory in the First Punic War the Romans decided to govern their newly acquired extra-Italian Territories directly by means of permanent military commands, the so-called provincial imperia. These measures proved to be decisive for the trans-formation of the political structures in the Mediterranean during the centuries to come: the provincial system of government thereby created by Rome provided the framework of administration for their continuously enlarged extra-Italian empire during republican times. Later on, it constituted the foremost basis of the princeps' power.
