Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:
Overview over the history of Byzantium from the foundation of Constantinopple by Constantine the Great to the end of the Macedonian dynasty in 1025. During this period, the successor of the East Roman Empire developed into a medieval Christian Empire at its political and cultural height. The course deals with social, economic and cultural (including religious) developments during this period, as well as the significance of the engagement with neighboring peoples (Persians, Arabs, Bulgars, Rus).

Aims, Methods:
Lectures with student participation and discussion of original sources.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written in-class exam (100%). No additional materials are allowed during the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Familiarity with the course content.

Examination topics

Content of the course and suggested readings. The exam has two parts: (a) five identification questions; (b) an essay on a specific question.
In order to facilitate exam preparation, six exam questions will be communicated on moodle before the end of the semester. A different one of these questions will appear at each exam date.
