Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Byzantine prayer books (euchologia) survive in manuscript form since the 8th century. Made for use by priests, they contain not only the eucharistic and sacramental liturgies for the life cycle, but also prayers for a variety of situations in daily life (childbirth, schooling, agricultural activities, forging social bonds). This course combines the methodologies of social history with manuscript studies and liturgical studies. The potential value of this hitherto neglected source material will be demonstrated and scrutinized.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination (100%).This will take form of a short essay (1500 to 3000 words) in response to an exam question. Your answer will be based on the content of the lecture, augmented by your own readings. Your work must be submitted to the instructor by e-mail on the date of the examination, before midnight (Prüfungsdatum). The exam question will be communicated on Moodle two weeks prior to the exam date.
