Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this practical course, you will learn about key categories of small finds and the artefacts that are commonly founds on archaeological excavations and surveys. These include metal items (e.g. tools, weapons, jewellery), ceramic items (e.g. figurines, textile tools), stone items (e.g. grindstones, lithics, sealstones), as well as environmental samples and ecofacts.

For each category of small find, you will learn the most important factors effecting their survival in the archaeological record, as well as artefact-specific conventions of documentation and recording. You will also engage in critical analysis of the interpretation and publication of small finds.

Instruction will take place in seven 3-hour classes between October and December, with each class addressing a different category of small find. In January, there will be two further classes for assessment, discussion, and questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Portfolio of three cataloguing exercises (each of a different category of artefact), the practical element of which will be undertaken in class (30%).
