Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

It was Polybius' chief aim to trace for his contemporaries the causes of the sudden rise of Rome; his history covered the times from about 264 B.C. to 146 B.C. His texts include not only important information on the political history of the Hellenistic times, but also general discussions on the purpose of historiography, on the principles of the Roman state, and on other broad subjects. We will read a selection of passages in the original and interpret and discuss them.

Assessment and permitted materials

I expect active cooperation during the course, especially in preparing the translations and interpreting the texts, as well as a paper. If these aims are achieved no final exam will be necessary.
