The main content of the seminar is the archaeological description and classification of various tombs and regionally or thematically homogeneous groups of tombs from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period. In accordance with the deliberately provocative term "Greek East", the focus will be on buildings from those areas where Greek cultural influence can be detected, but which were considered by parts of the ancient world as well as by representatives of classical studies, who for a long time followed the tradition of humanism, to belong to the "barbarian world". The majority of the buildings to be discussed are therefore located in Asia Minor, but tombs from northern Greece and the Levant are also discussed. The range of tomb types is wide and includes monumental tombs as well as rock tombs, freestanding structures, tumuli and sarcophagi. In accordance with the character of the respective tomb or group of tombs as well as the state of preservation, the focus in each case is on the architecture or any pictorial decoration that may be present, but the building is also to be integrated into its respective cultural-historical context.
Method:
The main part of the approach to the various thematic complexes will be formed by oral presentations by the students or the course leader, whereas the reliefs of a tomb construction (Heroon of Trysa) can be discussed on the basis of the plaster casts in the archaeological collection of the Institute of Classical Archaeology as well as the exhibited originals in the Ephesus Museum. A special tomb group will be worked out by the students together on the basis of the research literature and discussed in detail during the seminar.
