Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is devoted to the analytic study of the decorations of late antique churches and Synagogues. The earliest examples allow to identify several common features within a process of continuity, transition and mutual influences. Jewish and Christian communities lived side by side and relied on non-narrative scenes that conveyed a common universal language.
In this course, students will learn how to approach academic practice by exploring ornament and figure, and the aspects related to cross culturalism. The emphasis will be placed on mosaic floors that decorated religious and secular buildings of the two religious communities in Late Antiquity, with the help of images. In the first part (weekly meetings from March to April) students will receive personal assignments, learn how to approach and discuss their subject. The second part of the course will take place with individual presentations. Between the two parts, the sessions will serve to prepare and to discuss in group the research literature, structure, and synopsis.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular active, and continuous participation; small written assignments; oral presentation of one individual topic.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Each partial performance is assessed individually and must be assessed positively (40%). Presentations and written seminar papers each account for 40%, participation in the discussions and tasks in the preparation of the presentations account for another 20%. Missing two course lessons is allowed.

Examination topics
