Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims
During this Field Trip, we will explore the archaeological sites and monuments of Athens and the surrounding region of Attika. Special attention will be given to remains of the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods. We will visit key sites within the city including the Akropolis, Agora, and Kerameikos, as well as locations further afield including Eleusis, Sounion, and Thorikos. Central objectives are to understand the development of the urban landscape over time, and the integration of urban and rural communities.

Methods:
- In advance of the excursion, there will be three seminars, held digitally during the teaching weeks of the semester.
- Each student will be set an individual research topic. They will carry out in-depth work on this topic.
- During the excursion, students will engage with these sites and monuments at first hand, and present their research in the form of an on-site presentation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Handout (25%), participation (25%), presentation during the excursion (50%).
