Aims, contents and method of the course
The Romans had various ways of commemorating their dead. There were biographies of course, but more interesting are personal commemorations such as the laus funebris and especially inscribed epitaphs. The latter can be transmitted on their original stones, but are also attested transcribed in medieval (and later) MSS, sometimes as collections (syllogae). This course will concentrate on verse epitaphs and will start in the classical period before moving on to Late Antiquity and to the Early Middle Ages, where we’ll be working with inscriptions from Gaul (Gallia). Such texts are not regularly taught and need us. I am less interested in linguistic phenomena than in literary motifs and in cultural history. Think Lattimore, R. Paris: L'Imprimerie Impériale, 1856.We will read different texts together every week. Later in term you will be assigned a short text or texts for a personal project. You will translate it and comment on it on a Wiki.
Assessment and permitted materials
Grades will be assessed on the basis of class performance (preparation, engagement, tasks, shorter reports) and a final exam as well as the Wiki-project.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Ability and willingness to read Latin at sight in class and to study and prepare texts (sometimes non-standard) at home.
