Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture-course will explore the relationship between the Bible and Classical Culture during the Later Roman Empire. The coming of Christianity was the most momentous change during the Roman Empire. It affected all aspects of life and was transmitted primarily through the Bible (OT and NT). That momentous collection of disparate writings was of Near Eastern origin and had gone through a complicated serious of transformations before it reached the Greco-Roman world in various translations. It was corrupt and mistranslated, obscure and difficult, but also numinous and authoritative. Learning to understand and love this strange work was a never-ending process that needed to take place both within the individual and within society. And the encounter with the Bible is also of course a topic in literary history. After beginning with a very general introduction to the Bible in the Greco-Roman world, we will then move on to a series of targeted encounters with various Biblical passages. We will start by examining a few Biblical passages on our own (Genesis and Psalms), we will move on to patristic reactions to the Bible’s style (Jerome and Augustine), we will then explore various literary responses to the Bible, e.g. how it was versified, how it was interpreted, how it was preached.

You will get the most out of the lecture if you acquire copies of the Bible (Vulgata/German) and you bring a print-out of the texts that will be discussed that day with you.
