Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Introduction to the topic (development of the polemics against Islam in the Latin Middle Ages), joint reading and inter- and intratextual interpretation of representative parts of the poetic lives of Muhammad, written by Embricho of Mainz (shortly after the first crusade)- and Walter of Compiègne (immediately before the second crusade). By considering the different ways of presentation will be shown, how the character of Muhammad changed in the literature of this period; some of those elements remain until today.
Assessment and permitted materials
preparation of the translation of the texts and permanent cooperation; short oral exam at the end without aid
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
During the semester the texts have to be prepared at home for every lesson; during the oral exam the end one or two sentences of the texts discussed during the lecture have to be translated correctly and one question concerning the background has to be answered correctly.,
