Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content: The reign of the Emperor Justinian I (527-565) dominates the history and culture of the Mediterranean in the sixth century and beyond: wars of conquest, codification of law, (violent) consolidation of the Christian state and of imperial ideology, highlights of literature, art and architecture. This course will offer an in-depth introduction to the historical sources combined with a discussion of the controversial image of Justinian among contemporaries and in the eyes of posterity.
Aims and methods: Directed and independent reading in preparation of class discussions. Guidance in the methods of independent research, including oral presentations and written essays.

Assessment and permitted materials

participation in class discussion: 20%
oral presentation A, presentation of a biography of Justinian or Theodora: 20%
oral presentation B, presentation of a source text: 20%
oral presentation C on one of the session themes (10%) and, on this basis, written essay on a scholarly research question (30%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic knowledge of the course content. Attendance at all sessions in mandatory. Unavoidable absences must be communicated in advance of the session. No more than two absences are allowed to achieve a passing grade.
