Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Ostracism, i. e. the well-known voting procedure which gave the Athenian citizens the power to exile one of their leading politicians every year is widely attested in ancient literary sources as well as in primary evidence (e. g. about ten thousand preserved ostraka); unfortunately most of the informations provided by these sources are considered to be biased or unreliable by modern scholars. Therefore scholarly opinions differ widely as regards the reconstruction of this institution and the history of its use in fifth-century Athens.

Assessment and permitted materials

The basis of the grading will be an evaluation of the particpants contributions to the discourse and the research work.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at initiating a fresh discussion and interpreation of the evidence for some aspects of the Athenian ostracism.

Examination topics

Presentation of the material and critical evaluation in form of an open dicourse. Guided attempts at research and the oral and/or written presentation of the results thereby gained.
