Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture covers the work of the Patriarch of Constantinople and his Synod in the 14th century, for which period the so-called Register of the Patriarchate of Constantinople provides a (nearly) thorough documentation of the events and orders (besides documents still existing in archives, such as those on Mount Athos). The Register of the Patriarchate of Constantinople will be presented not only as a source of historical events, but also under sociocultural(linguistic) aspects. Subjects are a. o. the position of the patriarch towards the emperor as well as the position to the pope and generally to the Latins. A further focus is on the discussion with the doctrine of Gregorios Palamas and the changing positions of the patriarchs. The topics will be presented with texts (mainly of the register).
