Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims at shedding light on the expansion of the Turks in Anatolia in the pre-Ottoman and Ottoman periods until the conquest of Constantinople. The basis will be Ottomanist research and Ottoman sources. Students will get an overview of the origin of the Turks, the rise and fall of the Rum Seljuk Empire, the establishment of the Ottomans in Anatolia and the Balkans, the conquest of Constantinople, as well as Ottoman sources, the consecutive capitals, and the administration of the Ottoman Empire. Oral presentation with power points, which will be made available on Moodle.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam either at the end of the summer term.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The exam has a maximum of 100 points.
1 (sehr gut - very good) 100-90 points
2 (gut - good) 89-81 points
3 (befriedigend - satisfactory) 80-71 points
4 (genügend - sufficient) 70-60 points
5 (nicht genügend - failed) 59 points

Examination topics

There will be ten questions (ten points each) on subjects of the course on the basis of the power points and notes, as well as the literature given during the course.
