Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course addresses the North African provinces of the Roman Empire in the period between the 4th and the 8th century. This period includes the conquest by the Vandals from 429 AD, the recapture by the Byzantines in 533 AD and the immigration of the Arabs since the middle of the 7th century.
The lecture part will give a first insight into the material cultural heritage of North Africa. This will be considered under two aspects: The first aspect applies to the immobile structures of late antique settlements (from monastery to city complexes), the second aspect focuses on the mobile objects, some of which traveled far (from the simple to the sumptuous furnishings of the house, but also the diverse products e.g. of the textile, coinage and/or pilgrimage trade). Therefore, the lecture part also includes visits to various Viennese museums, where "mobile objects" of Byzantine times from North Africa but also from other geographical areas will be carefully considered with regard to their specific presentation in the set-up as well as the accompanying text and image information.
In the exercise part, the task for the students is to develop a virtual exhibition from mobile objects made in North Africa in Byzantine times, which is to be presented, finalized and finally put online during a two-day block event in June (alternatively on 16/17 June or 23/24 June 2023. For the block event, collaboration is planned with Prof. Dr. Elizabeth Bolman of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (USA) is planned.
