Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course explores the development of Greece from the late 19th century through the 20th century focusing on the themes of nationalism and irredentism as well as on the territorial-institutional consolidation of the modern state. Key events of regional or global significance, such as the Balkan Wars, the Asia Minor campaign, the World Wars and the Greek Civil War are examined alongside the evolution of the nation-state. Through guided readings and critical analysis, students will engage with diverse historical narratives, gaining a deep understanding of Greece's evolution from the period of expansion to the postwar period. This course is ideal not just for subject-specific students but more broadly for anyone interested in history, political science and areas studies who seeks to acquaint themselves with a key regional player in Europe.
