Aims, contents and method of the course

Diese Vorlesung verfolgt zwei Ziele: eine Einführung in das allgemeine Studium der byzantinischen Numismatik und eine Analyse der Münzprägung in Byzanz während einer der interessantesten Perioden der byzantinischen Geschichte, dem 8. und 9. Jahrhundert.
Diese Zeit ist tief geprägt von der ikonoklastischen Krise. Diese umfasst sowohl eine Infragestellung der religiösen Praktiken im Zusammenhang mit heiligen Bildern als auch eine Reflexion über das Wesen der Darstellung eines Individuums. Es ist daher faszinierend zu sehen, welche Auswirkungen diese Debatten auf die byzantinische Münzproduktion hatten (oder auch nicht). Nur wenige Jahre liegen zwischen der Entscheidung von Kaiser Leo III., den Ikonoklasmus zur offiziellen Religionspolitik des Byzantinischen Reiches zu machen, und den beiden Münzserien mit Christusdarstellungen, die Justinian II. an der Wende vom 7. zum 8. Jahrhundert in Auftrag gegeben hatte. Diese Zeit war auch geprägt von einer intensiven Rivalität mit den umayyadischen Kalifen und ab 750 mit den abbasidischen Herrschern, eine Rivalität, die ebenfalls Auswirkungen auf die byzantinische Münzproduktion hatte.
