Aims, contents and method of the course

The lectures will examine the aspects, modes and transformation of the sacred space in Late Antiquity and Early Christian/Byzantine periods with particular attention to the Church architecture. In particular terms as: ecclesia, domus ecclesiae, basilica, martyrium etc. will be discussed together with the issue of juridical property, private, imperial and ecclesiastical ownership as reflected in the written sources. The lectures intend to focus of terms of functionality of sacred space for example how church building evolved over time to respond to the needs of a growing Christian community, and how it was adapted to host liturgical functions.
