Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course offers a systematic analysis of the grammatical structure of Standard Modern Greek (SMG). At the same time, the course constitutes a “gentle introduction” into basic linguistic terms and synchronic descriptive/typological approaches for those with little or no backround in linguistics. The course main topics include the phonological and morphological system of SMG, morphosyntactic features (pre-verbal particles, finite complementation, “free” word order and information structure, compounding) and the lexicon. In addition, we will examine digital tools for compiling and exploring SMG corpora. Guest lecturers will also present their own work on SMG linguistic research.
Assessment and permitted materials
Final “take-home” and “open-book” exam (for instance in the form of a multiple choice quiz and/or short expository essays etc.)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
No previous knowledge of Modern Greek is required. Familiarity with the Modern Greek alphabet is desired but similarly no prerequisite. Knowledge of basic grammatical terms is presupposed.English and German are the working languages of the course, therefore average knowledge of both is a must. PPT-slides will be in English. Lectures will be held in English and/or German according to the course participants requirements.Basic grammatical/linguistic terms will be clarified in both languages.Grading key: 55-65% = 4, 65-75% = 3, 76-89% = 2, 90-100% = 1
Examination topics
All topics dealt in the lectures, course notices uploaded on Moodle, excerpts from selected works or papers.
