Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Detailed study of the Barcelona Alcestis, an anonymous poem in 122 hexameters that is transmitted in a papyrus codex currently housed in Montserrat. The work of the seminar will include reading and transcription, editorial problems, and philological and cultural commentary. The poem is intriguing, and interpreters have seen in it a poetic declamation or even a pantomimic libretto. It is a somewhat unusual major Latin literary find from a Greek-speaking context (Egypt). The poem was first published in Catalan in 1982 and has since then attracted a steady stream of commentary and emendation. Extensive and careful critical reading of secondary literature will be required. If time permits, other Latin poetic curiosa from Late Antiquity may be studied.
