Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Using as a starting point recent research on the subject and a selection of artists, records and texts that marked Greek popular music, in this seminar we will try to review and assess different forms of popular music during the postwar period. Following the receptions, transformations and ramifications of the rembetika tradition in postwar Greece, and with a special attention to poetry set to music, a trend that marked Greek popular music after the 1960s, we will attempt to review the emergence and development of new genres (laiko, entechna, neo kyma etc.). Those forms of cultural expression will be examined against the background of the broader socio-economic and/or cultural transformations of contemporary Greek society, the development of a domestic cultural industry, social and political upheavals, the influence of trends, fashions and ideologies coming from abroad, new forms of sociability etc. After the first introductory sessions, where the general historical context, methodological questions and bibliography will be presented, the second phase of the seminar will be shared between interventions of specialists and musicians and the oral presentations of the students.
