Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aim:
Although classical archaeology often focuses on urban centres, most of the ancient Greek world was rural. People lived in farmsteads and villages, worked on the land, and moved through the landscape constantly on journeys at all scales. Investigating the rural world, however, relies on particular methodologies. This course aims to introduce you, not only to the archaeology of the rural Greek world, but also to each of these methodologies.

Content:
We will consider the archaeology of the rural Greek world from the Late Bronze Age through to the Hellenistic period, using case studies in order to introduce methodologies in archaeological survey, mapping, phenomenology, and different types of environmental archaeology.

Methods:
Classes will comprise a lecture section to introduce the topic and methodology, followed by a practical exercise working with data from the rural Greek world.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment is based on:
1. Portfolio of in-class exercises (60%)
2. Timed exercise (40%)

Portfolio of in-class exercises
You should submit 3 of the in-class exercises for assessment. The main part of the work for these exercises should be done during the class itself, but you can make changes until the submission deadline.

Timed exercise
This will take the form of a practical exercise, interpreting data, similar to the in-class exercises. You will have a choice of 6 possible exercises, one for each of the methodological areas covered by this course. You should choose 2 to complete within the time available.
