Aims, contents and method of the course

Der Hellenismus ist ein Begriff, der von der Antike bis in unsere Tage eine Reihe von Formen und Bedeutungen angenommen hat. In diesem Seminar werden wir seine unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen sowohl innerhalb als auch außerhalb der griechischsprachigen Welt auf dem Balkan und im östlichen Mittelmeerraum nach der osmanischen Eroberung diskutieren. Im Verlauf von der Frühen Neuzeit über die Aufklärung bis zum Zeitalter der Nationalismen wurde der Hellenismus in vielfältiger Weise genutzt, unter anderem als erfundene Tradition und als Element einer europäischen kulturellen Identität oder als Grundlage für (ein oder mehrere) nationale Projekte. Mit Hilfe der Lektüre von Quellen, Diskussionen und Kontroversen zum Thema werden wir versuchen, die verschiedenen Konstruktionen des Begriffs in ihrem historischen Kontext zu verstehen.
