This course discusses the history of this patchwork of minority communities over the centuries of Ottoman rule until the age of nationalisms. By examining the relations of these communities with the Ottoman administration as well as with the European powers that claimed their protection in different ways and at different times, the aim of this course is to revisit the religious and ethnic multiplicity of the post-Byzantine Levant, the mobilities towards or within the vast contact zone of the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the different forms of sovereignty and extraterritoriality that emerged there in early modern times.
