Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is devoted to the study of lighting devices, dated to Late Antiquity and the early Byzantine period. Indeed, the light in churches, besides its natural practical function, assumed an important theological and liturgical meaning. The flame of the candles symbolized Christ as *the light of the world* and was therefore considered by the faithful to be an element of joy and transmission of the evangelical message from the Gospel. Therefore, in the context of the material culture of early Christianity a special attention should be addressed to the study of oil lamps.
The course focuses mainly on:
- Polyangistra and polycandela
- Introduction to Late Antique and Byzantine lamps
- Pagan, Hebrew, Samaritan and Christian iconographic themes on the oil lamps
- The inscriptions on the oil lamps
- The oil lamps of the early Islamic period
