Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The Sinai Peninsula holds special importance as a bridge between the African continent and Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranan and Palestine. Its strategic location prompted the foundation of a monastery by the Emperor Justinian in the sixth century. The Monastery of Saint Catherine has remained a major repository of Byzantine art and medieval manuscripts to the present day. This lecture explores the cultural history of this region until the early 20th century, with special emphasis on the Monastery and its study by scholars through the ages.
