Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In ancient Athens, as in any other culture or community, there was a set of collective educational practices and socialisation goals which aimed at forming the children into good members of the community. Those practices and goals largely depended on the class and gender: While boys oft he upper class where trained in schools and public institutions, girls remained at home where they were taught in household and child-rearing skills. Besides schools and the oikos, religion too formed a central aspect of ancient socialisation.
The seminar deals with the manifold areas if ancient trophe (child are) and paideia (education) on the basis of various written, visual and architectural sources. Thus, the students acquire knowledge about ancient educational practices as well as competences in handling different media and testimonies. The inclusion of different genres and disciplines requires abstract thinking and context oriented research.
