Aims, contents and method of the course

Die Familie ist der soziale Kern aller Gesellschaften. Im byzantinischen Mittelalter bildet die Familie,erweitert durch Sklaven und Bedienstetein ihrem Anwesen auch eine wirtschaftliche Einheit, den Haushalt (oikos). Als modellhaftes Konzept werden Familie und Haushalt auch angewendet auf die Konstituierung grösserer sozialer Verbünde. Dabei ergeben sich wichtige Differenzierungen im Unterschied von Hauptstadt und Provinz, und in der historischen Entwicklung von Früh-, Mittel- und Spätbyzanz.
Diese Problematik soll anhand von drei grossen Themenkomplexen beleuchtet werden:
(1) die soziale Konstruktion des Individuums (Kindheit und Jugend, Sexualität, Frauen, Männer, Eunuchen, Ehe)
(2) der Haushalt als soziale und ökonomische Einheit
(3) die Familie und der Haushalt als Modell für Bruderschaften, Kaiserhof, Klöster

Assessment and permitted materials

Anwesenheit und Teilnahme an der Diskussion aufgrund der vorbereitenden Lektüre (30%), drei themenorientierte Kurzreferate mit Handout (je 15%: 45 %), Referat über einen Quellentext (25%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Einführung in grundlegende Aspekte der byzantinischen Gesellschaft und der relevanten Quellen, gleichzeitig auch Einführung in die Problematik und Methodologie der mittelalterlichen Sozialgeschichte

Examination topics

Selbständiges Erarbeiten und Diskussion ausgewählter schriftlicher und nicht-schriftlicher Quellen, Überblick über forschungsgeschichtliche Zugänge

Anforderungen: Griechischkenntnisse sind erwünscht.
