Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Too many students find themselves unable to translate Latin without a printed translation and dictionary. Too many students always write down their translations. Some try to memorize a translation. This continuous assessment course aims to help students liberate themselves from training-wheels and crutches and teach them sight-translating skills that ought eventually to translate into the ability to read. The materials will be Classical Latin, consisting of both prose and poetry. They will vary constantly. Every week there will be a new text, presented unannounced. The aim is to produce a ready student as opposed to a prepared one.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will do best who attend the classes and study the last text they read carefully. They will also do well to review grammatical problems that emerge during the readings. The teacher enjoys a pro-active audience, so students are encouraged to ask questions.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Ground rules for the class: materials will be distributed on paper. No cell-phones or computers will be allowed. Paper flow. Work will be done at sight without dictionaries or translations.

Examination topics

Grades will be based on oral performance, a final sight-translation examination, and a short written exercise to be handed in after the end of term.
