Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims
The aim of the course is to obtain an appropriate basic archaeological knowledge of the subject area of Roman crafts. This includes the different professions of craftsmen in the Roman Empire and the production process from raw materials to the production and final product of goods. Likewise, the various archaeological (and ancient studies) source genres will be dealt with.
Within the framework of the PS, the students acquire the essential competencies in the area of lecture and presentation techniques and the writing of specialized seminar papers. The examination of the proseminar topic serves as additional knowledge acquisition.

Contents
The central topic of the proseminar is Roman crafts. Craftsmen were an important part of the Roman economy, so many finds represent products of such diverse enterprises. On the basis of the archaeological find material, manufacturing processes from raw materials to processing to the finished product can be traced. Equally important are the workshops and tools used for production. In addition to the material remains, the occupational status and social role of craftsmen and traders will also be discussed.
The proseminar is intended to provide a first comprehensive insight into the topic and is oriented primarily towards archaeological sources, but other source genres will also be dealt with.

Methods
The focus will be on the work and interpretation of material culture: this includes the description of finds and features, typological classification, and the reflection and use of archaeological literature. The results are to be presented by means of a paper with a presentation and a subsequent written paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

The performance assessment is carried out through the evaluation of three sub-performances:

- Oral presentation on a selected topic of the course topic - presentation topics and requirements are announced in the first unit of the course (40%)
- Written pro-seminar paper on the topic of the presentation - specifications will be announced in the course (40%)
- Active participation and collaboration in the PS and the discussion (20%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular attendance and partial performances from the oral presentation, the written proseminar paper, and active participation are considered for the assessment. Excused absences are permitted for three units. This should be announced to the course instructor in advance, stating the reason for absence.

For a positive assessment, in addition to regular attendance, at least the written proseminar paper or the oral presentation and one of the other partial performances must be completed positively.

Examination topics

The PS is a continuous assessment course. The examination material includes all topics covered in the course. The teaching materials are provided on Moodle.
