Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Infectious diseases and epidemics are interwoven with the history of human societies from the ancient times to our present. Based on recent research, historical accounts and literature on the subject this class will discuss a number of such cases and the response of local societies in Modern Greece, i.e. the Greek lands under Ottoman (or Venetian) rule in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the Greek state after 1830 to our days.

The different responses of state authorities and the various agents of local societies to the recurrent waves of epidemics and infectious diseases are closely linked with the history of medicine and of public health and hygiene policies. At the same time, the history of the diseases is a history of what we know about them and how did we have learn to fight them. The way in which different communities responded, in different circumstances, to the constant threat of death is intimately linked both to the development of scientific knowledge and to collective fears, their manipulations, prejudices, stereotypes, fake news and scapegoats.
