Aims, contents and method of the course

Antike Objekte haben während des 19.Jh. viele Menschen in und um Griechenland tagtäglich beschäftigt: die Behörden, Sammler:innen, Universität, Antikenhändler:innen, wissenschaftliche Vereine, Tourist:innen, Anwohner:innen sowie Imperien und Staaten. In dieser Übung werden wir die unterschiedlichen Standpunkte dieser Gruppen zur Frage welcher Raum (physisch sowie metaphysisch) Antike und Antiken zustünde, kennenlernen und diskutieren. Wir werden wiederholt darauf zu sprechen kommen, um welche Gruppen es hier im einzelnen geht, wie sie sich überschnitten und im Laufe der Zeit veränderten.

Dabei wird die Periode 1834–1899, während der das erste Antikengesetz des Landes in Kraft war und somit einen Referenztext darstellt, besonders im Fokus stehen. Es wird als roter Faden für die neugriechische Kulturgeschichte antiker Objekte betrachtet.

Neben der gemeinsamen Lektüre und Diskussion von Sekundärliteratur werden wir uns mit historischen Quellen aus der Zeit beschäftigen. Wir erarbeiten uns aus der Antikenrezeption Grundkenntnisse zu diesem wichtigen Merkmal der Kulturpolitik, Ideengeschichte, genauso aber Biographie, Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte des frühen griechischen Staates.

Assessment and permitted materials

Text discussion with the group, independent presentation of your reading in short written assignments as well as by oral presentation.

Written assignments in partial fulfillment of this course may be submitted in German, English, or Greek.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

German and English are required. Reading skills in Greek will be beneficial, but are not required.

Required achievements for your assessment:

- Course attendance and discussion of reading assignments (50 %)

- Discussion of the course topics in written form (in reference to the course literature) (30 %)

- Oral presentation at the end of term, with a handout (20 %)

The partial achievements will be assessed seperately (1-5). The final assessment will be their average grade.
