Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The practical course aims to guide the student to the basic techniques of documenting, describing and drawing pottery for archaeological purposes. Considering that very few pots recovered from archaeological contexts are complete enough for a photograph to provide useful information, while a drawing can instead supply information even from small fragments that cannot be documented with other modern techniques (for example scanning).

Drawing materials and equipment should be brought by the students (some instruments can be shared):
1) Profile gauge or solder wire for measuring profile
2) Calipers or dividers for measuring the thickness of a vessel wall
3)Tracing and millimetre paper for initial pencil drawing
4) pensile
6) Compass

Assessment and permitted materials
