Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents:Byzantine prayer books (euchologia) survive in manuscript form since the 8th century. Made for use by priests, they contain not only the eucharistic and sacramental liturgies for the life cycle, but also prayers for a variety of situations in daily life. This course combines the methodologies of social history, manuscript studies and liturgical studies. The potential value of this hitherto neglected source material will be demonstrated and scrutinized.

Aim of course: Communication of course content

Method: Lectures with participation by the students in discussion and independent work with the sources

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination (100%). No additional materials may be consulted during the examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic familiarity with the material covered in the course
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of ancient or Byzantine Greek
