Der Schwerpunkt der Vorlesung wird einerseits auf der Zeit des byzantinischen Reiches liegen, andererseits aber auch auf der Weiterentwicklung der Musik in der Post-Byzantinischen Epoche bis herauf zur Entzifferung der byzantinischen Musik im 20. Jhd. Neben der historischen Darstellung wird die Vorlesung das Noten- und Modalsystem, relevante Handschriften, Gesangsgattungen, Komponisten, Parallelen zur westlichen Kirchenmusik, die heutige Gesangspraxis sowie die Erforschung der byzantinischen Kirchenmusik behandeln.
Tonbeispiele sowie ein Besuch der Handschriftensammlung der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek runden die Vorlesung ab.
