Aims, contents and method of the course
Die oben genannten drei byzantinischen Geschichtswerke nehmen aufgrund ihrer Eigenart und hervorragender literarischer Qualität einen besonderen Platz innerhalb der byzantinischen Geschichtsschreibung ein, und können ohne Übertreibung als Höhepunkte angesehen werden - auch wenn sie offenbar nicht die Produkte einer literarischen Entwicklung darstellen, sondern eher als Einzelfälle gelten müssen.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Ziel ist die ästhetische Würdigung dieser Werke, sowohl vor dem Hintergrund der literarischen Tradition, deren Teil sie sind, als auch im Bezug auf ihren eigenen historischen und kulturellen Kontext.
Examination topics
Die genannten Geschichtswerke werden nicht hauptsächlich als historische Quellen, sondern vielmehr als literarische Werke mit ästhetischen Ansprüchen studiert und interpretiert. Die Erkenntnisse der neueren Forschung im Bezug auf literarische Aspekte dieser Werke werden - in Kombination mit der Lektüre ausgewählter Abschnitte in deutscher Übersetzung - präsentiert und besprochen.
