Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction to Byzantine culture and history, along with an overview of the history of scholarship of Byzantine studies and related scholarly disciplines.
The following issues will be addressed: history and periodicization; language and literature; handbooks, lexical and other research tools; manuscript studies; historical geography, sigillography, epigraphy; archaeology and art history; economic and social history; military history, history of medicine; history of law; Byzantium and the world.
Each topic will be approached from three angles: What is the basic knowledge that students should acquire on a specific theme? How did the Byzantines themselves conceptualize this issue? How has this issue been approached in the history of scholarship.

Assessment and permitted materials

oral participation (30%), written examination (70%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Acquisition of basic knowledge about Byzantium and the history of Byzantine studies.

Examination topics

Lectures combined with discussion and independent analysis of source materials.
