Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course focuses both on the territories of historical Armenia as well as on the developments of Armenian communities in many regions of the Mediterranean and Near East from the period of the Christianisation of the Armenian Kingdom in the 4th cent. CE until the Ottoman conquest in the 16th cent. CE. In particular, political, economic, religious and cultrual relations between Armenia and neighbouring great power (Rome resp. Byzantium, Persia and the Islamic world) will be discussed, equally the networks which were established within the Armenian "Diaspora" over long distances. With the joint reading of original text sources (in translation), images and maps an illustrative overview of the significance of the Armenians within the medieval world will be presented.
