Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
The students possess theoretical knowledge and practical skills that enable them to design and implement a scientific research project in the field of DaF/DaZ. They will be familiar with qualitative and participatory research methods relevant to the research field of DaF/DaZ for the collection, processing and analysis of data and will be able to use these methods in a targeted manner. Students are able to differentiate between subject area, research question and research question. Students are able to consciously decide on a goal-oriented and meaningful method of data collection, processing and analysis and are able to argue for it. Students have the necessary skills and software knowledge to correctly implement methodological considerations. They are able to plan, conduct and present an independent empirical research project in the subject DaF-/DaZ.

The following contents are taught:
- Topic delimitation and question formulation
- Sensible choice of data collection, processing and evaluation methods
- operationalization
- Choice of software to support implementation and execution
- Overview of research designs, survey, processing and evaluation methods/ relevant survey methods

Survey methods:
- Interview types and interview guides
- group discussion
- Observations, observation protocols
- document research
- questionnaire
- participatory research methods - photo voice

processing methods
- transcription, GAT and HIAT
- tools: F4, Exmaralda, moviscript, ELAN

analysis methods
- Qualitative content analysis
- Linguistic content analysis with focus on codebook
- Narrative analysis (language biographies)
- Conversational analysis
- Text type/genre analysis
- Discourse analysis
- Video or image analysis
- Basic concepts of statistics for design and questionnaire in connection with evaluation

Presentation
- Planning pentagon with focus on question and argumentation
- Poster presentation of the exposé
- Formulated exposé

Methods:
Lecture, group and individual work, presentation, reflection and feedback.

Assessment and permitted materials

Examination-immanent courses from the range of SPL10 are in principle subject to compulsory attendance.

Written contributions of all course types of SPL 10 can be subjected to an automatic plagiarism check; this includes in particular papers of the pro-, bachelor- and master-seminar level, but also course examinations (e.g. lecture examinations) and partial examinations (e.g. intermediate test, 'homework').

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

10% of the attendance will be taken into account for the participation, 30% for the written homework and 60% for the written thesis. All sub-performances must be completed and positively evaluated.
