Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This online lecture focuses on non- and low-literate adult migrants who are in the process of acquiring literacy in a second language (cf. Lemke-Ghafir et al. 2021). In the first part (hosted by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Christoph Schroeder from Potsdam), we will look at the linguistic foundations of literacy (as opposed to orality) and the acquisition of literacy, and investigate the variety of writing systems and of orthographic systems. In the second part (hosted by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Karen Schramm from Vienna), speakers from three different countries will present examples of teaching materials which were developed on the basis of the new LASLLIAM reference guide by the Council of Europe (2022) in order to illustrate levels of learning below A1. The third part of the lecture (hosted by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Christine Czinglar from Jena) focuses on acquisitional processes, cognitive aspects and the assessment of literacy development in this vulnerable learner group. Each host invites three international researchers who will present online and in some cases also in a hybrid format, i.e. speakers will be on site and meet with the students. In order to relate these nine lectures from international researchers to the locals contexts of students in Jena, Potsdam and Vienna, we will frame them by on-site discussions of local student groups in German.
