Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Most students are familiar with the verbal categories of tense and mood. Those who are learning a Slavic language (or were attentive in the basic linguistic courses) might also know the category of aspect. However, providing precise definitions for the three categories proves by no means trivial, especially when it comes to the question of possible overlaps among them. Very different definitions are provided by different theories and will be discussed within the course. Throughout the discussion, our central question will be: which categorizations do the theories arrive at for the German language, e.g., is there something like aspect in German?

Assessment and permitted materials

The minimum requirement for passing is submitting a term paper (ca. 15 pages including ca. 10 pages of main text). Students are encouraged to prepare their papers as soon as possible, since everyone will have to present an outline of their paper during the third part of our compact course. You will find some helpful documents on Moodle. If you have any questions don't hesitate to mail to: tabea.reiner@univie.ac.at (e-mails will be checked regularly from April 2016 onwards).
The term paper and the presentation will be rated separately; the overall result is calculated from both marks (paper: 70%, presentation: 30%).
Attendance in the meetings is compulsory; exceptions have to be agreed upon.
